Katrina Kaif

Born in Hong Kong on July 16, 1984 Katrina Kaif is one of eight siblings, all girls, from a mother who is a Caucasian of British Nationality, and a father who was formerly from Kashmir, India, but who has since acquired British citizenship. She spent subsequent years in Hawaii, and then in London, Britain, She started modeling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the tender age of 14, when she was approached for a jewelry campaign. Thereafter she continued modeling in London. Continuing to model was the reason she got her break in a Bollywood movie 'Boom' offered by none other than film-maker Kaizad Gustad. She was flooded with modeling assignments the minute she set her foot on Indian soil, especially with her innocent expressive face, hour-glass figure, and drop-dead gorgeous looks. Professionally she started off as a model with photographer Atul Kasbekar, and upon being accepted, she received offers from LG, Cola, Fevicol, Lakme, & Veet. It was the Lakme commercial that got her noticed. She retained Matrix as her Manager to accept work on her behalf and at the price she deserved. Moving to different culture and country was not much of a culture shock for her, as she states that no matter where you come from, the bottom line is that everyone wants to be loved, respected, and cared for. Unlike other artistes from foreign lands, Katrina did not experience any difficulties in getting a visa nor of getting it extended in India.

Although linguistically challenged, Katrina puts on a bold face and states that other Bollywood artistes like Sridevi, who did not know Hindi, did get offers from Bollywood film-makers, and she is no different. She has taken Hindi and dancing lessons to fit in with the Bollywood culture. She likes to display a picture of her learning Kathak dancing where she used to dance 7 hours a day non-stop. Despite of her soft gorgeous looks, she is not easily intimidated, but admits that she is very emotional, almost an incurable romantic, wears comfortable non-revealing clothes when at home, hates to do her hair, and above all dislikes make-up. Admitting to being lonely in the beginning, but now has several friends who she can hang out with. Although her first movie 'Boom' was panned by the critics and shunned by the audiences, two other Telugu movies 'Malliswari' and 'Pidugu' did get her noticed. She grossed 70 Lakh Rupees for 'Malliswari' - making her top the list of the highest paid actresses during a South Indian movie debut. Not done with South Indian movies, she has been signed in a Tamil movie 'Bheema' opposite National Award Winner Vikram.

She has received decent reviews for her part in "Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya", as well as a brief appearance in 'Sarkar'.

Katrina had made Mumbai her base, didn't mind singing and dancing around trees and as a result is now one of the biggest mega-stars, perhaps one of the highest paid female-lead actresses in Bollywood, and a crowd-puller whenever she makes an appearance for a live song and dance number.

Amisha Patel

Her films Yeh hai Jalwa with Hrithik and 'Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar', with Salman bombed at the box office. Then came Gadar, which turned out to be a big blockbuster. What happens when a Biogenetic engineer dashes through sandy beaches in her short n sexy pink dress? People scream Kaho Na Pyar Hai! She's not just an engineer from Tufts University, but also a gold Medallist in Economics. She is a typical beauty with brains combo! This Gujrati damsel is Amisha Patel. She was born on June 9th, 1979?

It was at a family dinner in the Roshan's house that Rakesh Roshan offered her a starring role in his film, Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai (2000). Amisha Patel stole hearts with her impressive performance in the film opposite Hrithik Roshan, the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of 2000. Other films, she worked in were Suno Sasurji with Aftab, Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage with Hrithik, Yeh hai Jalwa with Salman, Yeh Zindagi Ka Safar, all of which bombed at the box office. Then came Gadar, one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian cinema, in which she gave a stupendous performance and which included her in the top league of actresses in Bollywood.

Anjana Sukhani-Shahana battle over Jashn

It looks like Mukesh and Mahesh Bhatt's Jashn has got more heroines than it had bargained for.
From being a film in frantic search of a leading lady it has now got two ladies both claiming to be the film's actual female lead. While Anjana 'Golmaal Returns' Sukhani plays Adhyayan Suman's romantic lead Shahana 'Rock On' Goswami who plays Suman's sister claims Jashn is a brother-sister story.
Says Shahana, "I play the female lead in Jashn. Adhyayan Suman's sister. The story is about the brother and sister." Counters Anjana, "But she's playing Adhyayan's sister's role!"
Going by the age-old descriptions of the conventional heroine Anjana has a point. The girl who gets to romance and sing with the hero is the leading lady.
However, definitions of the leading lady have changed over the years. And the girl paired with the leading man needn't be the main female protagonist.
Explains Shahana, "My character and Adhyayan's run parallel in the plot. She disapproves of his casual attitude to life. But they care deeply for one another and look out for one another. My character is like a mother looking out for Adhyayan's character financially and other practical matters. While he sustains her emotionally."
Sounds like the brother-sister musical Dance Dance (directed by B Subhash) where sister Smita Patil kept tabs on bro Mithun Chakraborty's dreams of being a musician.

Mahesh Batt disagrees. "I see no connection between the brother-sister story in Dance Dance and our film. In Jashn, the sister (Shahana) is of a woman who's mistress to a rich man. The kid-hero (Adhyayan) liberates her from the sordid life as a mistress."

Little wonder the romantic lead was refused by Sonal Chauhan and Prachi Desai. But Anjana Sukhani seems determined to make the best of the situation.

"Jashn should do the trick for me. I don't know why the other heroines (Sonal Chauhan, Prachi Desai) refused to do it. It's untrue to say that the male lead has the pivotal role while the girl has nothing to do in Jashn.

I've a very important role. And though Adhyayan Suman plays a musician, I've my own songs and my own track in the plot."
